¼ cup white sugar
¼ cup brown sugar
1/2 cup butter flavored Crisco
1/2 cup of unsweetened applesauce
1 cup of unsulfured molasses
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
2 teaspoons ground ginger
1 ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon mace
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup hot water
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9-inch square pan.
In a large bowl, cream together the sugars and butter flavored Crisco. Beat in the egg and applesauce, and mix in the molasses.
In a bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, mace, allspice and cloves. Blend into the creamed mixture. Stir in the hot water. Pour into the prepared pan.
Bake 35 – 40 minutes in the preheated oven, until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow to cool in pan before serving.
