VIEW VENDOR PROFILE »

Wedding magazines & trends typically focus on women: wedding colors, bridesmaid dresses and popular silhouettes, and a day really focused around the blushing Bride. Along comes same-gender couples, and suddenly everyone wants to be Queen For The Day!

Grooms - both gay & straight - are no longer playing it safe on their wedding day and increasingly want to put their own stamp on the celebration. With marriage equality steadily sweeping the nation, I believe we’ll see even more handsome grooms expressing their own unique styles and letting their personalities not just peek -- but shine through!

Here are my top five grooms & groomsmen trends for 2015:

Mismatched

Davidwood ClothierVIEW PROFILE »Mismatched dresses for bridesmaids have been popular for a few seasons now, but has finally caught on with groomsmen. For the same reason this works well for the ladies, it works for men too – making it easier to plan for a destination wedding, or if on a tight budget, you can wear a favorite suit you already own or pay for a new suit that you can wear for another occasion. Groomsmen are individuals, so let their outfits reflect their snazzier sides! By choosing different shades of the same color for the groom’s party, it will create a smart and cohesive look for a wedding ensemble.

Smart Casual

Piper Jo Nevins PhotographyVIEW PROFILE »Let’s face it, we are a casually dressed society – so why make your wedding day be the first time you attempt a tuxedo look? The benefits of a less restrictive dress code means that brides & grooms can look & feel like the best versions of themselves on the Big Day. So if you don’t usually slick your hair down, why start now and be unrecognizable? If the grooms aren’t known for their fashion and have never worn a suit in their lives, why expect them to start now? Grooms can look just as gorgeous in a smart casual outfit, and it is the perfect alternative to traditional suits for casual or outdoor weddings. This look also works perfectly with the mismatched too! Smarten-up dark dress jeans with a well-fitting blazer and plaid pocketchief.

English Heritage

Brittany Rae PhotographyVIEW PROFILE »Think “country gentleman” with tweeds, herringbones, paisleys & sophisticated plaids. This isn’t about exactly replicating an era, rather creating a casual look with hints of old world, timeless elegance. If you’re considering patterns for your wedding be sure you are hitting the mark by asking yourself, “Would Lord Grantham wear it?” If the answer is yes, then keep this theme head-to-toe only for the grooms, and in small touches in accessories for the groomsmen -- such as paisley pocketchiefs or plaid cummerbunds. Otherwise, the whole wedding party could look like a hunting scene from Downton Abbey!

Art Deco & the 1920's

Pratt Abbott CleanersVIEW PROFILE »The Art Deco look owes thanks to director Baz Luhrman -- or actually Leonardo DiCaprio -- for looking so smashing in the film, “The Great Gatsby.” The movie started a trend in 2013 that continues strong today.  Flapper fringe, geometric shapes and metallic colors ruled the Red Carpet for the ladies, but the guys took subtle yet dapper cues with “soft” colored suits (putty, dove grey) and relaxed fit Oxford trousers, vests, variations of cuffs and collar shapes. Don’t forget the fun accessories like top hats, paperboy caps and vintage glasses.

Color

Gay Life PhotographyVIEW PROFILE »One of the easiest ways to express personality & style is with color, and certainly gay men are no stranger to experimenting with a bold color palette! As marriage equality sweeps all four corners of the country, we have started to see ALL grooms utilize pops of color through socks, braces, ties and pocketchiefs. Next year, expect to see grooms getting even braver and bolder with full colored suits - particularly in jewel tones of deep blues, emeralds, purples & burnt reds - as we head into the winter season.

Epilogue

Your wedding fashion choices should reflect your lifestyle and both of your comfort levels. If alternative choices have always been your path of choice, why change now that you’re getting married? If you want pink, don’t disappoint with just a pink bowtie. Wear those pink pants, and look fabulous knowing that you did your wedding your way. Look back on your wedding, and hear Frank singing in your diamond-studded ear…”I Did It, My Way!”

Casco Bay Lines

I've been to many parties held on boats but never for a wedding ceremony itself! Guests excitedly boarded the “Bay Mist” and were immediately taken care of by the Casco Bay Lines captain and attentive staff. The ceremony was officiated by a family member and guests were then treated to a beautiful cruise around Casco Bay while enjoying catered hors d’oeuvres and cocktails.

Having all the details of the event coordinated by Casco Bay Lines was a fun yet relaxing change of pace and a great experience for both the happy couple and their guests. Maine visitors were treated to a tour of the islands, lighthouses, and quaint Victorian cottages along the shoreline.

We eventually docked on Peaks Island and had an amazing dinner with sunset views. A perfect evening out on the water thanks to Casco Bay Lines – who also charter reception & rehearsal dinners, bachelor/ette parties, and boat rides for really any occasion. Casco Bay Lines provides a memorable exciting & relaxing experience for your Maine coastal wedding!

Roost Café & Bistro | Portland Discovery: Land & Sea Tours

October 2014 Sid's Picks

Roost Café & Bistro

“Came by this place by mistake. What a great mistake! My husband I went the next night - he loved it! What a find."

”The food, the ambiance, the owners and staff - everyone was so nice.”

“Relaxed but elegant!“

And the accolades just keep coming...

The Roost Café & Bistro is an exceptionally family-friendly place! I have been dining at the Café since they were in York and have followed them to Ogunquit! Through the years I have dined with friends & families, and the staff and owners have always gone out of their way to accommodate and make sure our dining experience was excellent!
The food and service are always great and having a gluten free menu is an added bonus!

Beautiful garden outside, cozy atmosphere inside, warm welcome and friendly servers start you off right. Try the crispy fried calamari for an appetizer; they’re truly crisply and very tasty.  Lobster poached in butter with potato puffs, gnocchi with bolognese sauce, truffle fries, and lobster roll - all outstanding!
Full bar offers professionally made cocktails and a good selection of wines. All and all a wonderful experience!

Grace Restaurant

"Sophisticated American cuisine & creative cocktails in the soaring sanctuary of a former church," one Google reviewer summarized Grace perfectly.

The restaurant's motto is: Food. Art. Spirit., and Grace certainly delivers artful cuisine by way of their state-of-the-art kitchen set smack in the middle of a renovated Gothic-style sanctuary. Their lofty venue is perfect for a large reception dinner, or an intimate dinner in the former Choir Loft balcony. I enjoy taking visitors to Grace because the venue is otherworldly -- and no matter how worldly my guest, they too are always impressed by the ambiance of Grace.
